Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant academic area of instruction supervised, or a Master’s degree and 18 graduate hours in a relevant academic area of instruction supervised
  • 5 years teaching experience in higher education and 3 years of higher education supervisory experience
  • Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Effective working knowledge of the policies, procedures, and operations of Brunswick Community College and the North Carolina Community College System
  • Experience in curriculum development and accreditation
  • Experience in conflict resolution with students and faculty
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner and maintain effective working relationships with members of the Board of Trustees, administration, staff, students, and the general public
  • Effective discretion in the handling of confidential information and sensitive materials
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree
  • 10 years teaching experience in the North Carolina Community College System
  • 5 years of experience as a Department Chair or Director in the North Carolina Community College System with supervision of multiple program disciplines
  • Experience with credit and non-credit offerings

Position Description

GENERAL FUNCTION

Under general supervision of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Dean of Public Safety provides critical leadership for program directors and faculty members in their assigned program area at Brunswick Community College (BCC). The Dean will provide leadership for the institutional effectiveness of the division through ongoing assessment, planning, evaluation, program review, and ensure accurate records and reports are maintained and submitted as required. This includes establishing strategic plans for the program areas that align within institutional and faculty goals annually. The Dean of Public Safety will provide leadership for credit and non-credit areas of study at BCC. Program oversight includes, but is not limited to, Criminal Justice, Basic Law Enforcement Training, Fire, EMS, Public Safety Administration, 911 Communications & Operations, and various in-service and/or non-credit training for first responders in our service area. In addition, the Dean maintains an operating budget, approves class scheduling, teaches an assigned class load, and serves as a faculty advisor. The Dean will investigate and develop, as appropriate, new curricula, programs, and course offerings; monitor and evaluate all Public Safety curricula, course offerings, and scheduling to ensure programs and courses reflect current compliance with BCC and accreditation standards. The Dean will monitor advisory committee activities and faculty teaching loads. The Dean will monitor and assess divisional faculty and staff professional development goals/activities; conduct classroom and performance evaluations of their direct reports. Deans are expected to participate in the shared governance of the College through committees and meetings, shared leadership within and across divisions and personal recommendations to College administrators. The Dean will provide vision and leadership in an environment that embraces student success, responsiveness to our community needs, high performance, and integrity.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides leadership, promotes collaboration, and institutional vision to program directors, full-time faculty, and adjunct faculty within the program areas of supervision
  • Assists the Vice President of Academic Affairs in long-term strategic planning for the program areas
  • Serves as a mentor and provides support to faculty in establishing key goals and objectives
  • Coordinates the Division’s efforts to grow, develop programs, and increase program enrollment
  • Coordinates the annual programs’ operating budgets and track expenditures in key operational areas throughout each semester
  • Assists with recruiting of new faculty members
  • Assists with curriculum development, program review, and assessment
  • Teaches a reduced assigned class load, which may include a variety of courses, both on and off-campus.
  • Serves as a faculty advisor and maintains office hours in accordance with procedures established by the Vice President of Academic Affairs
  • Assists with reviewing and recommending textbooks, reference materials, equipment, software, etc.
  • Develops a strategic plan for equipment purchases that supports the mission and strategic plan of BCC
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through a variety of sources
  • Completes all reports and participates in meetings as requested
  • Demonstrates a commitment to a student-centered learning environment and comprehensive “One College” approach to credit and non-credit offerings
  • Work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population
  • Perform other duties as assigned
