Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or comparable work experience for certificate or diploma programs plus at least 3 years teaching experience in post-secondary setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in related field plus 3-5 years teaching in community or technical college. 

Position Description

The program chair is appointed by the Vice President of Instruction to serve as a link between faculty and administration and to exercise authority over and responsibility for the development and administration of the industrial and technical trade programs.

 

Essential Job Functions

As an instructor, perform the essential functions of curriculum instructors specified in the instructor – Curriculum job description in addition to the following:

Work with the appropriate administrator in instructional matters. 

Be responsible for the quality of the courses taught in the department and continuously evaluate for their improvement; conduct annual program review.

Meet with students concerning problems they may be having with faculty or courses in the department; ensure that all difficulties with students are documented in Maxient.

 Assist in building and maintaining high “esprit de corps” in the department and among the entire faculty.

Be responsible for ordering, inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment and supplies specifically assigned to the curriculum.

Be responsible for developing and monitoring the annual equipment, materials, travel, and supply budget for the department within the amount of money allocated to the school and to each department. 

Continuously evaluate textbooks for currency.  

Assist in the development of the semester curriculum schedule as requested by the Dean and VP of Instruction.

Assist in retention efforts and program review process.

Meet with prospective students as requested. 

Develop and/or maintain a course syllabus for each course offered by the department. 

Assist the Dean, Vice President and Associate Vice President of Instruction in recruitment, selection, orientation, and evaluation of full and part-time departmental faculty. 

Conduct audits and classroom observations each semester; provide ongoing supervision of all full and part time direct reports, including but not limited to, daily class coverage; leave requests and records; and review of census and grade rosters.

Order all textbooks for courses offered by the department.  Turn in textbook orders to the bookstore according to established deadlines. 

After consulting with the appropriate departmental instructor, either approve or disapprove student requests for proficiency examinations. 

Serve on College committees as assigned.

Advise students in the appropriate area.
