Job Description
The Instructor will be responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, developing courses, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field. The Instructor will be responsible for quality instruction and effective participation and interest in the College’s affairs related to the Emergency Medical (EM) Program directives. This position will also work to maintain program compliance with accreditation standards according to Surry Community College, NCOEMS, and CoAEMSP. This position reports directly to the EMS Program Director, who provides oversight of all EM Programs.

Essential Duties and Responibilites
Teaching:
1. Provide instruction in all levels of Emergency Medical Program* courses as assigned by the Director.
2. Develop learner-centered lesson plans.
3. Employ teaching strategies & instructional materials for different learning styles.
4. Incorporate, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in the classroom, distance learning and laboratory environments.
5. Create and model a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population.
6. Prepare, distribute and utilize instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media and other devices as appropriate.
7. Update and revise curriculum to maintain currency.
8. Assist in the data collection and entry of the EM Programs accreditation requirements with NCOEMS/CoAEMSP.
9. Assist with appropriate assessments of student learning outcomes.
10. Under the supervision of the Coordinator, evaluate course effectiveness and provide feedback for quality enhancement.
11. Assist the Coordinator of EM Programs in maintaining equipment and supplies for courses.
12. Attend meetings, conferences and other functions as directed to maintain proficiency.
13. Serve as a student resource.
14. Teach an average load of 20-24 hours per week during the program semesters.
15. Complete other duties and assignments as directed by Program Director.
*Emergency Medical Programs include Paramedic, Critical Care Paramedic, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, Emergency Medical Technician, Emergency Medical Responder, and continuing education courses.
Professional Development:
Maintain a professional status that supports the instructional mission by:
1. Participating in professional development activities to maintain currency in field
2. Maintaining current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation.
3. Participating in professional development opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies.
Administration:
Provide daily & ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment and student records to include:
1. Maintaining classroom and laboratory spaces, including upkeep of assigned equipment.
2. Providing for the security of facilities, equipment and instructional materials and maintaining safe working conditions.
3. Maintaining student records (e.g., grades and attendance) in accordance with established deadlines using FISDAP Program and/or other programs as assigned.
4. Complying with all applicable College, state and federal rules and regulations.
5. Complete all required Surry Community College annual education.
6. Maintain a clean and safe work area.
Student Support:
Provide an environment conducive to student success to include:
1. Conducting recruiting activities.
2. Providing academic advising.
3. Promoting retention/persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success.
4. Assisting students with the registration and graduation process.
5. Referring students to campus and community resources when appropriate.
College Service:
Support college-wide endeavors to include:
1. Collaboration with faculty and staff from other divisions/departments to promote communication, coordinate schedules and support student success.
2. Collaborating with educational partners, business/industry and/or external agencies as appropriate to promote the instructional mission of SCC.
3. Supporting collegiality and teaching excellence by actively participating in the professional development of new and veteran faculty (e.g., mentoring and peer observation).
4. Participating in extracurricular student activities/clubs.
5. Attending college professional development sessions, college/division/department meetings, graduation and convocation, as required.
6. Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem-solving, responsibility and teamwork.
