Minimum Qualifications

Current, active unencumbered license, or multistate licensure privilege to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the state of North Carolina and two (2) calendar years or the equivalent of full­time clinical experience as a registered nurse.

Preferred Qualifications

Nursing faculty who teach in a program leading to initial licensure shall hold a graduate degree from an accredited institution or obtain a graduate degree in nursing from an accredited institution within five (5) years of initial full­time employment; have education in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to faculty assignment.  This preparation may be demonstrated by one of the following: 

  • Completion of 45 contact hours of Board approved continuing education courses;
  • Completion of a certificate program in nursing education;
  • Nine semester hours of graduate course work in adult learning and learning principles;
  • National certification in nursing education; or

Documentation of successful completion of structured, individualized development activities of at least 45 contact hours approved by the Board. Criteria for approval shall include content in the faculty role in the curriculum implementation, curricular objectives to be met and evaluated, review of strategies for identified student population, and expectations of student and faculty performance.

Position Description

Teaching and Learning:

  • Teach assigned courses using appropriate instructional methodologies and in accordance with college approved course descriptions, outlines, current course syllabi, and the philosophy and purpose of the program.
  • Explain course objectives and evaluation procedures to students at the beginning of each course.
  • Fulfill the duties of clinical or lab instructor in supervision of students as applicable.
  • Provide any necessary instructional assistance beyond regularly scheduled class hours.
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on student progress in a prompt manner; assign final grades in accordance with college procedures.
  • Evaluate student performance using methods appropriate to the course.
  • Maintain accurate course records including enrollment and attendance information and grade reports.
  • Inform students of departmental and college rules and procedures.

Curriculum Development:

  • Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of course descriptions, outlines, and objectives and participates in the selection of instructional resources, make recommendations to the Director, ADN.
  • Participate in program evaluation to determine achievement of program outcomes, North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) performance measures and standards, compliance with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) criteria, and compliance with standards as prescribed by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act.
  • Assist in development, implementation, and evaluation (using the ADN Total Program Evaluation Plan) of the nursing curriculum and courses.
  • Participate in departmental activities relative to revising and updating the program(s) in the area of expertise.
  • Assist with the development of new programs in the area of expertise.
  • Make recommendations to the lead instructor for selection of supplies, equipment, equipment repairs, textbooks for courses of study, and the scheduling of classroom and laboratory facilities.

Advising:

  • Maintain advisee files and regularly conduct advisee conferences to provide information for student progress toward goal completion.
  • Participate in registration for students.
  • Refer students to proper source for assistance with personal, financial, academic, or social issues. 

Institutional Service:

  • Serve on college committees and perform other duties as assigned by the Director, ADN.
  • Assist with marketing, recruitment, and retention of students.
  • Recommend members to serve on program advisory committee.
  • Attend program advisory committee meetings.
  • Represent the college favorably at all times, work cooperatively with affiliating health care agencies. 

Professional Development

  • Develop a professional development plan that is approved by the Director, ADN, and participate in those activities that achieve approved professional development activities.
  • Maintain current licensure, certification, or other professional credentials required for position.
  • Remain abreast of current knowledge, skills, and trends in the field.
  • Maintain membership and participation in professional organizations.
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and professional meetings.
  • Participate in on campus professional development activities.

    Physical Demands:

    The employee will need to regularly operate and use computers, phones, and other electronic equipment. The employee will frequently communicate with other employees and students and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. The employee may need to move around their office and/or campus to attend meetings/classes and to access files, machinery or other job-related tools. The employee may need to lift and/or move equipment, tools or paperwork up to 25 pounds. The employee may need to position themselves by reaching, stooping, kneeling or crouching in order to adjust or collect equipment and/or supplies. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
