Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, ESL, or a related field. Community college, adult education, or ESL teaching experience preferred; experience working with English Language Learners highly desirable. Fluent in Spanish.
Position Description
Availability of teaching hours varies between 3 and 24 hours weekly and may be combined with non-instructional duties. Courses may occur on campus or at various community locations. This position reports to the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Director. The instructor would build their new schedule with the CCR Director and there may be day and/or night opportunities.
Assesses individual learners’ needs; prescribes a plan of instructional activities; teaches class with an informed, enthusiastic, and caring approach using a variety of instructional strategies addressing different modalities; conducts class in a manner which creates a positive learning environment; keeps a progress file on each student; evaluates each student’s progress and revises plan monthly; begins and ends class on time; leaves classroom at least as neat as found and is responsible for locking room or building (if applicable).
Recruitment and Follow-up
Recruits students in order to maintain adequate number on roll; contacts students who have missed three class sessions; is alert to student problems, whether of an academic or personal nature, and refers these the appropriate administrator; spends adequate time preparing for each class; familiarizes himself/herself with available materials; uses a variety of materials and methods; attends in-service workshops regularly and maintains communication with campus office (i.e. checks college email daily and mailbox weekly).
Record Keeping
Maintains accurate records (attendance, registration cards, LEIS forms, etc.); submits accurate end of month reports; completes end-of-term reports and end-of-class data accurately and promptly within the deadlines given; maintains confidentiality of student records; and maintains security of all tests and answer keys.
Professionalism
Displays professional attitude and appearance within the guidelines of the College and Career Readiness department; keeps current on instructional technology and methods; develops an active interest in students, not only in the area of academic progress, but also in social and economic conditions that may affect Haywood Community College; interact with co-workers and perform tasks with the highest level of integrity; promote and support HCC’s mission, vision, and values and promote and support coworkers in the most positive manner.
