Access to Achievement

Access to Achievement is a state-funded IDD workforce training program empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to pursue their education and career goals with confidence.

History of Access to Achievement

Access to Achievement began in 2022 as a pilot project at Brunswick Community College and Catawba Valley Community College. The project established training programs that provided credentials that would lead to increased employment outcomes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The goals of the pilot project were to establish best practices for vocational training, provide financial and benefits counseling, develop strategies for integrating assistive technology, maximize access to credentials, increase orientation and integration of individuals with IDD into the college community, and develop needs assessment, marketing and evaluation tools. Based on the success of the two-year project, in 2023 the North Carolina Legislature appropriated funding for the program to expand to a total of fifteen colleges. Today the program empowers students with IDD across North Carolina to pursue their educational and employment goals with personalized support and meaningful opportunities.
