Workforce and Continuing Education Programs
This team provides leadership and direction in the following program areas: Workforce Continuing Education, Public Safety Training Programs, Human Resources Development (HRD), and the Community Service Program (CSP). Programs span from short-term workforce training to degree programs offered in various instructional modalities and locations.
- Workforce Continuing Education: Workforce Continuing Education training programs provide instructional opportunities for individuals seeking to gain new or upgrade current job-related skills. Programs can be delivered as a single course or bundled as a series of courses; and provides instruction around skill competencies that lead to a recognized credential (licensure, certification, renewal, registry listing) and meet local workforce pipeline needs.
- Public Safety Training Programs: NC Community Colleges offer numerous education and training programs preparing future and existing professionals for careers in public safety. Among these are Code Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Emergency Dispatch, Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, and Fire & Rescue Services. These comprehensive offerings include short-term workforce training, degree programs, and ongoing continuing professional education and training.
- Human Resources Development: The Human Resources Development (HRD) program provides skill assessment services, employability skills training, and career development counseling to unemployed and underemployed adults. These courses shall address six core components as follows: 1) assessment of an individual’s assets and limitations; 2) development of a positive self-concept; 3) development of employability skills; 4) development of communication skills; 5) development of critical thinking skills; and 6) awareness of the impact of information technology in the workplace. Each college shall operate a Human Resources Development (HRD) program to provide assessment services, employability training, and career development counseling to unemployed and underemployed individuals.
- Community Service: Community Service programs provide courses, seminars, and community activities that contribute to an individual’s cultural, civic, and personal growth.
Training and Credentials
Colleges provide industry-aligned short-term workforce development training. Many of these offerings lead to state-regulated and industry-regulated credentials. Offerings include continuing professional education, corporate training, human resources development, and lifelong learning, personal enrichment courses.

Administrative Resources
Workforce & Continuing Education Programs consults and advises college staff on policies and procedures found in General Statutes, SBCC Code, and other applicable laws and regulations and provides relevant tools, resources, professional development opportunities.
