N.C. Community College System Announces Dr. Carver’s First Day as Interim President
RALEIGH—The N.C. Community College System (NCCCS) today announced Dr. William S. “Bill” Carver began his first official day as interim president Monday, July 25. Dr. Carver succeeds Thomas Stith III who resigned effective Friday, July 22. Dr. Carver is committed to carrying out the mission of the Great 58 while a search for a new president is underway. Carver has agreed to serve as interim until the search committee finds a new permanent president to lead the System Office.
“Today begins my second opportunity to serve as interim president of the NC Community College System,” Dr. Carver said. “What I learned from the last experience is that the System Office has many dedicated public servants. Service-minded individuals that assist the colleges every day. There is no “system” without the System Office. These employees make it possible for each college to support students at the highest level. The NC Community College System is the envy of community colleges around the country. Many initiatives started here have been copied time and time again. As interim president, I am committed to continuing the great work of the System Office team and know that together we will turn the page on a new chapter in its proud history.”
Carver served as president of Nash Community College from 2005 to 2019. He also previously served as interim president of the NC Community College System, following the August 2020 departure of then NCCCS President Peter Hans, who left to become president of the University of North Carolina System.
At Nash Community College, Carver served in a variety of roles before becoming president, including instructor, director of the Small Business Center, director of business and industry services, dean of continuing education and vice president of instruction. During his tenure as president, Nash Community College expanded its campus and grew enrollment by 42 percent, while increasing online enrollment by 30 percent. He launched successful strategic planning and fundraising initiatives there.
Carver earned a bachelor’s degree at NC State University, a Master of Business Administration from Campbell University, and a Doctor of Education degree from Nova Southeastern University.
