State Board approves new president for Sampson Community College

RALEIGH – The State Board of Community Colleges today (Jan. 19) approved the selection of Dr. William “Bill” Starling as president of Sampson Community College.
Starling will succeed Dr. Paul Hutchins, the college’s president since 2012, who is scheduled to retire in June.

Starling has worked at Sampson for 38 years and currently is the college’s vice president of academic affairs and administration. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Starling holds a master’s degree from East Carolina University and a Doctor of Education degree from N.C. State University.

In other action, the board:

  • Approved an Associate in Engineering degree to be offered by Carteret Community College in Morehead City.
  • Approved an Associate in Applied Science degree for Emergency Medical Science to be offered by College of The Albemarle in Elizabeth City.
  • Approved an Associate in Applied Science degree for Agribusiness Technology to be offered by Piedmont Community College in Roxboro.
  • Approved spending up to $25,000 from the board’s reserve fund to pay for expenses associated with the search for the North Carolina Community College System’s next president.
