State Board of Community Colleges to Hold Media Availability Thursday, March 31, 11 a.m.
WHAT: The State Board of the NC Community Colleges System will meet Thursday, March 31, 2016, in the NC Community College System Office, 200 W. Jones Street, Raleigh at 10 a.m. to review the qualifications of a candidate for System President. Following that meeting, Scott Shook, Chair of the State Board, will conduct a media briefing, beginning at 11 a.m.*
WHO: Members of the media will hear from Chairman Shook, as well as the System President candidate, pending approval by the State Board during its morning meeting.
BACKGROUND: Nearly a year ago, the State Board appointed the Presidential Search Committee to assist with identifying and hiring the eighth System President. The committee, chaired by State Board member Jerry Vaughan and including six other Board members – Chairman Shook, Jimmie Ford, Wade Bryan Irwin Jr., Board Vice Chair Janet K. Lowder, Edward Lynn Raye and Dr. Darrell Saunders – has met 18 times during the intervening months. Non-voting members Lyn Austin, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Johnston Community College and of the NC Association of Community College Trustees; Dr. Garrett Hinshaw, President of Catawba Valley Community College and Immediate Past President of the NC Association of Community College Presidents; and William S. Wellons, Trustee at Fayetteville Technical Community College, have also been part of the Search Committee. The Board signed a contract for $70,000 with an executive search consultant in October 2015 to facilitate the search process.
George Fouts, a 43-year veteran of the NC Community College System, has served as Interim System President since September 1 following the departure of System President Scott Ralls as he assumed the Presidency of Northern Virginia Community College, and will continue to serve in that role until the new System President is in place.
