About
Mark Merritt serves as Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Charlotte Pipe & Foundry, bringing decades of distinguished legal experience across private practice, higher education, and public service. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill—where he was a Morehead-Cain Scholar and inducted into Phi Beta Kappa—he earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Virginia Law Review. Following a federal clerkship under Judge John Minor Wisdom of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, Merritt built an illustrious legal career, holding past presidencies with both the North Carolina State Bar and the Mecklenburg County Bar. His extensive contributions to the profession have been widely recognized, including receiving the North Carolina Bar Association Litigation Section’s prestigious Advocate’s Award and the H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award.
 
Deeply committed to public education and governance, Merritt returns to the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges, having previously served a dedicated term from 2021 to 2025. Reappointed by the Governor to fill a term through June 30, 2027, he brings a wealth of institutional insight and leadership acumen back to the board. Throughout his multifaceted career, Merritt has consistently championed educational opportunity, professional mentorship, and the rule of law across North Carolina.
