Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Healthcare, Education, or Administration from a regionally accredited college or university, plus
  • Dental Hygiene credentials from a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA):
    • Associate’s degree in Dental Hygiene and Bachelor’s degree in a related field; or
    • Bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene
  • Minimum of 3 years full-time employment or equivalent qualifying experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist or Dentist.
  • Minimum of 2 years full-time or equivalent of experience teaching in a dental hygiene program.
  • Experience with dental national accreditation (CODA) standards and procedures.
  • Licensure and other Special Requirements:
    • Current unrestricted license as a Dental Hygienist in North Carolina (and Virginia, if instructor will be supervising students on clinical affiliation in Virginia) or eligibility to obtain one.
    • American Heart Association BLS certified.
    • TB skin test if assigned to clinical agencies.
    • Any additional health requirement of assigned clinical agency/agencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s of Dental Hygiene degree and/or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Membership in the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA).
  • Membership in the American Dental Assisting Association (ADAA).
  • More than 3 years of full-time experience in dental hygiene.
  • More than 3 years teaching experience in Dental Assisting/Dental Hygiene within a post-secondary institution.
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternative instructional delivery systems.
  • Current certification in Local Anesthesia or willingness to complete it within 6 months of hire.

12-month Faculty

Program Coordinator receives an additional $150 monthly stipend.

The role of the Program Coordinator, Dental Hygiene & Assisting is to supervise and coordinate all activities (student, faculty, and instructional) associated with the Dental Hygiene and Assisting program(s) of study.

The Program Coordinator, Dental Hygiene & Assisting is supervised by the Dean of Health Sciences and Wellness Programs.

 

Examples of Duties

General:

  • Primary responsibility is for operation, supervision, evaluation and revision of the Dental Hygiene and Assisting programs.
  • Maintain competency in theoretical knowledge pertaining to areas of instruction, as well as in current trends in the program’s curricula.
  • Adhere to assigned teaching load/hours.
  • Review the monthly budget of all program supplies, equipment and travel expenditures to avoid overspending.
  • Maintain security of equipment assigned to the program.
  • Supervise the accurate preparation and routing of various reports from the program.
  • Assist in preparation of requests for special funds to enhance the program.
  • Participate actively in college and department committees as assigned.
  • Represent COA in the community in a positive manner.
  • Keep the department’s advisory committee apprised of the current status of activities within the dental program.
  • Maintain membership in professional organizations as appropriate.
  • Participate in, and provide information for, the various evaluation processes at the College.
  • Participate in the selection of full-time and part-time faculty members for the program.
  • Encourage and assist faculty members with their own personal and professional development as appropriate.
  • Participate in the recruitment of students for the program and the college as appropriate.
  • Assist with establishing guidelines for the selection and awarding of the program’s scholarship recipients (those scholarships given by organizations and private individuals).
  • Serve as an advisor to students in the programs.
  • Maintain an awareness of the textbooks being used in the program and order books in the appropriate time frame for students to purchase from the bookstore prior to the beginning of class each semester.
  • Seek campus facilities that are appropriate in type, number and accessibility to meet the needs of the total program.
  • Chair program faculty meetings which should be held on a regular basis. Maintain documentation of these meetings and distribute this as appropriate.
  • Implement improvement program for faculty as needed.
  • Evaluate the organizational structure of the program’s faculty and make recommendations to the Dean regarding revisions.
  • Ensure all course syllabi for the program are kept current and on file in the appropriate office(s).
  • Participate in the process for the addition/deletion of library books, program-related journal and magazine subscriptions and audiovisual materials in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Maintain membership in professional organizations as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Unique:

  • Participate in the review and revision of, and adhere to the policies/guidelines in the Dental Programs’ handbooks and Bloodborne Pathogens Handbook.
  • Attend an annual training session on Bloodborne Pathogens and Exposure Control Plan.
  • Receive input from faculty, students, and graduates related to evaluation of clinical learning resources and act appropriately.
  • Attend meetings with affiliating clinical agencies as requested by clinical liaison persons.
  • Participate in the annual review of contractual agreements with the Dental Hygiene and Assisting Program and affiliating agencies, revising these as necessary.
  • Work with Health Sciences Admissions and Advising Director and faculty to incorporate retention strategies for Dental students, as necessary.
  • Maintain competency in theoretical knowledge and clinical skills pertaining to areas of dental instruction, acquiring a minimum of ten (10) contact hours of continuing education every year.
  • Coordinate and conduct a pinning ceremony as appropriate.
  • Assist with Dental Advisory Board membership and plan an annual meeting.
  • Supervise and evaluate clinical facilities, preceptors and students for dental clinical experiences.
  • Write letters of reference for students requesting scholarships or nominations for various awards/recognition, and for employment.
