Beaufort CCC Named Number One in HiSET and Vocational Challenge

Congratulations to Hyde Correctional Institution for being named the number one goal achiever in the Eastern Region in the NC Department of Adult Corrections HiSET and Vocational Challenge. The HiSET is a high school equivalency program comparable to the GED. For high school equivalency and digital literacy classes, Career and College Readiness (CCR) instructors teach on-site three days a week. These programs serve as a stepping stone, helping students show employers they are ready to work at reentry.

During the 2025-2026 fiscal year, BCCC offered 15 classes across the two prisons, serving 295 students. Six students earned their HiSET at Hyde, and four earned their HiSET at Tyrrell.

Hyde reached an outstanding 282% of its goal, placing 5th among 54 facilities statewide for a Top Five finish. Tyrrell Prison Work Farm also earned recognition, achieving 110% of its goal and placing 6th in the Eastern Region.

“These accomplishments reflect the power of education, teamwork, and a shared dedication to student success,” said Penelope Radcliffe, Director of College and Career Readiness. “We are proud of what our students and staff have achieved this year.” None of this success would be possible without the partnership BCCC shares with Hilda Spencer at Hyde Correctional Institute and Deanna Basnight at Tyrrell Prison Work Farm.
