Rain or Shine: How SPCC Student and Security Guard Jimy Gamez Inspires a Campus Community
Published: September 21, 2026
Every morning, before the sun is over South Piedmont Community College (SPCC), a familiar and reassuring presence greets students and staff at the front door. Rain or shine, full-time campus security guard Jimy Gamez is there, offering a bright, welcoming smile that sets a positive tone for the entire day.
But ensuring campus safety is just one chapter of Jimy’s remarkable story. Within the very walls he protects, Jimy has undergone a profound educational transformation, recently reaching a milestone that inspires everyone around him.
Building a Foundation, One Class at a Time
Jimy’s journey at SPCC began with a commitment to self-improvement. Recognizing the importance of communication and technology in today’s world, he first enrolled in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. Eager to expand his skill set, he balanced his work schedule to also complete Digital Literacy courses, mastering the technological tools essential for modern career advancement.
His hard work reached a monumental peak this past spring. Through sheer determination, Jimy earned his High School Equivalency (HSE) credential. His persistence and leadership did not go unnoticed; Jimy was chosen as a student speaker for SPCC’s Adult Basic Skills Commencement ceremony, where he shared his journey of perseverance with his fellow graduates.
Stepping Into the Future
Earning his high school credential was not the finish line for Jimy—it was a launching pad. This semester, Jimy has officially transitioned into an Industry Pathway at SPCC with the support of the Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) program, taking his very first continuing education course. This new academic venture marks his entry into specialized technical training, designed to open new doors in high-demand economic sectors.
What makes Jimy’s academic and professional achievements truly extraordinary is the sheer volume of responsibilities he balances outside of the college. In addition to working forty hours a week protecting the campus, Jimy is a dedicated family man raising his children and a deeply devoted leader heavily involved in his local church community.
An Inspiration to the Trailblazer Spirit
Jimy Gamez embodies the very essence of what a community college student can achieve. He is a protector of the campus, a dedicated scholar, a family anchor, and a spiritual pillar.
“We are incredibly proud of Jimy and excited to see all that lies ahead for him,” said the SPCC community during his commencement milestone. As Jimy walks into his continuing education classes this semester, he does so not just as a student, but as a living testament to the power of hard work, faith, and lifelong learning.
The next time you walk through the front doors early in the morning, make sure to return the smile to the man who helps make SPCC a brighter, safer place to learn.
