Resilience in Action: Kayla Fields’ Journey Back to Education

Published: September 21, 2026
Kayla Fields has overcome significant adversity and refused to allow her circumstances to define her future. As a child, both of her parents struggled with addiction, and the challenges in her home life contributed to her leaving school after the 9th grade.
In her early 20s, Kayla faced addiction herself after becoming dependent on pain medication. For the next 10 years, she worked through the difficult process of recovery, spending time in multiple detox and rehabilitation facilities. During one of those stays, she was given a Bible, and a verse became a source of strength and encouragement as she continued her journey toward recovery.
In 2023, Kayla moved to North Carolina, where she began attending church and continued working to rebuild her life physically, mentally, and spiritually. Her commitment to personal growth eventually led her back to education.
Kayla enrolled in Davidson-Davie Community College’s College and Career Readiness (CCR) program in March 2026 to pursue her High School Equivalency (HSE). To date, she has successfully completed four of the five HiSET tests required to earn her credential. She is currently enrolled in a Transition Math class as she prepares to complete her final test and achieve her educational goal of being college ready. Kayla’s plans extend beyond earning her HSE. She intends to enroll in the Basic Skills Plus program and will begin the program’s curriculum coursework in October. Her long-term dream is to use her experiences to help others through motivational speaking.
Throughout her journey, Kayla credits her instructors, Tamera Holcomb and Melisa McDowell, along with the CCR staff, for their support, guidance, and encouragement.
Kayla’s story is one of remarkable resilience, courage, and personal accountability. Her experiences have strengthened her determination to create a different future for herself and to use what she has learned to encourage others. By returning to education and continuing to move forward, Kayla is not only changing the direction of her own life—she is preparing to help others believe that they can change theirs as well.
