Who May Qualify?

  • Are enrolled at a North Carolina community college
  • Are a parent or legal guardian responsible for childcare expenses
  • Need childcare support to remain enrolled or participate in coursework
  • Use an eligible childcare provider
  • Provide required documentation (invoice/receipt) 

Eligible Childcare Providers

Childcare providers may include:

  • Licensed daycare centers
  • Licensed and unlicensed individuals providers
  • Unlicensed daycare centers
  • Grandparents or other relatives (not the parent of the children)
  • Personal nannies
  • Before-school or after-school programs
  • Summer programs

What Expenses May Be Covered?

The grant may help cover eligible childcare expenses that support a student parent's ability to remain enrolled and participate in college-related activities.

  • Reasonable based on local childcare rates
  • Properly documented
  • Connected to the students enrollment and attendance
  • Not already paid by another agency, grant, or outside funding source

How Funds Are Paid

Child Care Grant funds may be paid:

  • Directly to the childcare provider, or
  • To the student-parent for the purpose of paying an eligible childcare provider.
  • Funds disbursed after the college receives an invoice from the childcare provider and verification of student attendance.
  • Funds cannot be paid in advance for services that have not yet been provided.

Important Restrictions

Child Care Grant funds may not be used for:

  • Advance payments for future childcare services
  • Parents may not be paid to care for their own children
  • College administrative cost or salaries
  • Operating costs for college childcare facilities
  • Childcare staff positions
