National Apprenticeship Week is Nov. 13-19
RALEIGH – National Apprenticeship Week takes place Nov. 13-19. North Carolina companies, industry groups, nonprofit organizations, unions, labor-management organizations and educational institutions will highlight how apprenticeships prepare workers for the jobs of today and the future.
Events and activities may include apprenticeship program open houses, skills competitions, apprentice graduations, business open houses, high school or college career fairs and apprenticeship signing days.
“Since 1939, ApprenticeshipNC has helped meet the needs of a skilled workforce in North Carolina, and we are excited to have it within the NC Community College System. It is a perfect fit in our strategy to grow the state’s economy and build our workforce,” said Jennifer Haygood, acting president of the NCCCS.
“ApprenticeshipNC is a unique, flexible training system that combines job-related technical instruction with structured on-the-job learning experiences and provides workers incremental wage increases as they progress on the job. Upon completion of training, this ‘Earn and Learn’ model also provides both state and national credentials. It is the gold standard of training in preparing North Carolina workers to compete in a global economy.”
The Trump Administration has made expanding apprenticeships across all industries a priority. North Carolina will put the spotlight on how apprenticeships can help Americans obtain the skills needed for success in today’s workplace.
Following are a few of the events scheduled during National Apprenticeship Week:
- Nov. 11, 9 a.m. – Apprenticeship Catawba will host a kickball tournament followed by a picnic lunch at the Maiden Community Center. This event will give current and recently graduated apprentices an opportunity to get to know one another. Apprenticeship Catawba’s successful three-year partnership continues to promote registered apprenticeship for high school students in advanced manufacturing careers.
- Nov. 13, 6 p.m. – Gaston College will hold a panel discussion with women employed in different aspects of advanced manufacturing, including production, education, management and human resources. The event will take place at the college’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Dallas.
- Nov. 15, 11 a.m. – Cummins Inc. in Whitakers will celebrate the graduation of nine apprentices during a banquet as a show of its appreciation and the apprentices’ commitment to hard work. Federal and state credentials will be awarded during the event.
- Nov. 15, 1 p.m. – Information sessions for Gaston College students and the public to learn more about the Apprenticeship 321 program. The event will take place at Gaston College’s Myers Center Café.
- Nov. 17, 8 a.m. – Fayetteville Technical Community College will host a breakfast and open house for the employers in the community to discuss apprenticeship as it relates to bridging the skills gap and opportunities for military veterans. The event will be at the FTCC Center for Business and Industry.
