NC Community College System and NC Independent Colleges & Universities sign articulation agreements for three disciplines

RALEIGH – Students pursuing Music, Theatre or Visual Arts at North Carolina’s community colleges can now seamlessly transfer to any of a number of private colleges in the state to complete a bachelor’s degree in one of those disciplines.  NC Community College System President Peter Hans and North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities President Hope Williams signed articulation agreements today at a ceremony held at William Peace University.

“The signing of these agreements is another important step in increasing opportunities with our community college colleagues for transfer to NCICU campuses,” Williams said. “These are extensions of our comprehensives agreement and will help streamline the transfer process.”

“If you’re a visual arts student, a theatre student or a music student working toward your Associate in Fine Arts degree, you will know what courses you need to take at the community college. And you will have peace of mind in knowing that upon acceptance to the private college or university, those courses will transfer,” Hans said. “These agreements are examples of how we’re simplifying processes and aligning better with our partners to accelerate students’ progress.”

The agreements provide a progression degree plan that includes required general education and prerequisite courses that are acceptable to all signatory programs. The NCICU Board approved the agreements on Nov. 9, 2018, and the State Board of Community Colleges approved them on Feb. 14, 2019. The agreements will go into effect with the 2019 fall semester.

  • 33 community colleges are approved to offer the AFA in Visual Arts and 14 private colleges signed the Visual Arts agreement;
  • 18 community colleges are approved for the AFA in Music and 15 private colleges signed the Music agreement; and

Additional private colleges are expected to sign as their faculties approve the agreements.
