New State Board members sworn in

RALEIGH, N.C. – Three new members of the State Board of Community Colleges took the oath of office Friday.

The new members are:

A former superintendent of the Bertie County Schools, she also held education leadership roles at the UNC System, N.C. State University and the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.
  • Mary Ann Rice, senior vice president at the State Employees Credit Union. Rice is the former chair of the Asheville-Buncombe Technical College Board of Trustees and served on the boards of the North Carolina Arboretum and the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as a number of nonprofit and foundation boards.
  • Jesse Watts Jr., president of the North Carolina Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association. Watts, a U.S. Army veteran, has been a student leader at Fayetteville Technical Community College, where he is pursuing associate degrees in computer programming and development, network management and systems security and analysis.
In other action Friday, the State Board voted to approve paid parental leave for eligible employees of the NC Community College System Office. The approval followed an executive order signed this year by Gov. Roy Cooper that extended a paid parental leave benefit to state employees of cabinet agencies. The board’s policy, effective Jan. 1, 2020, provides up to eight weeks of paid parental leave for an employee who gives birth and four weeks of paid leave for non-birth giving new parents.
