State Board approves new president for James Sprunt Community College, new senior VP of NCCCS

PINEHURST – The State Board of Community Colleges today (March 15) approved the selections of Dr. Jay Carraway as president of James Sprunt Community College in Kenansville and Dr. Kimberly Gold as senior vice president and chief academic officer of the NC Community College System.

Carraway is vice president of continuing education at Lenoir Community College in Kinston. He previously served as the dean of that division, associate dean of satellite campuses, associate dean of campuses at the college’s Greene County campus, and director of the Greene County Center. Carraway earned his doctorate in educational leadership from East Carolina University, where he also obtained a Master of Arts in educational administration and Bachelor of Science in health and human performance.

Carraway will begin work as president April 29, succeeding Dr. Ken Boham, who has served as interim president since July.

Gold has served as president of Robeson Community College in Lumberton since 2017. She also worked at Isothermal Community College in Spindale for more than 20 years, rising through the ranks to become executive vice president and chief academic officer. She earned her doctorate in educational leadership from Appalachian State University, Master of Business Administration from Western Carolina University and Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Gold will begin work at the System Office on July 1, succeeding Dr. Lisa Chapman, who will become president of Central Carolina Community College in Sanford on April 1. Wesley Beddard, the system’s associate vice president for programs, will serve as interim chief academic officer from April through June.

Meeting at Sandhills Community College, the board also took the following actions:

• Approved three new Associate in Applied Science degree programs to be offered by Central Carolina Community College, beginning in fall 2019. The degree programs are Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology; Electrical Systems Technology; and Mechanical Engineering Technology.
• Approved two new Associate in Applied Science degree programs to be offered by Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem, beginning in fall 2020. The degree programs are Aviation Electronics Technology and Aviation Systems Technology.
