State Board of Community Colleges approves new president for Brunswick Community College

RALEIGH – The State Board of Community Colleges today approved the selection of Dr. L. Eugene “Gene” Smith Jr. as president of Brunswick Community College.

Smith currently is vice president of academic and student services at Wayne Community College, where he has worked for 25 years as an instructor and administrator. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology and a doctorate in educational leadership, all from East Carolina University.

Smith will begin work Jan. 2. He will succeed Dr. Susanne Adams, who is retiring after seven years as president and more than 40 years in education.

In other action, the board:

• Approved an Associate of Applied Science degree in human services technology to be offered by Isothermal Community College, beginning in fall 2019.
• Approved an Associate of Applied Science degree in agribusiness technology to be offered by Sampson Community College, beginning in spring 2019.
• Approved an Associate of Applied Science degree in electroneurodiagnostic technology to be offered by Wake Technical Community College, beginning in fall 2019.
• Gave preliminary approval to Guilford Technical Community College’s request to designate its aviation center as a multi-campus center. The board agreed to include funding for the center in the NC Community College System’s 2019-20 budget request to the Office of State Budget and Management and the General Assembly. Final approval by the board is contingent upon the legislature’s appropriation of funding for the location, which is adjacent to Piedmont Triad International Airport.
